    Promoting the Health of Gender and Sexual Minorities


    • Define multiple terms related to the concept of sexual identity.
    • Define heterosexism and homophobia and identify how they may be barriers to increasing professional awareness of gender and sexual minorities (GSM).
    • Summarize myths related to the GSM population.
    • Describe research challenges related to the GSM population.
    • Describe select theoretical models related to the development of one's sexual identity (the "coming-out" process).
    • Cite unique health and safety concerns experienced by the GSM population and available resources that healthcare professionals can provide to these patients and their families.
    • Identify culturally appropriate strategies useful for implementing skills, including the application of crosscultural communication.

    Sexual Addiction


    • Compare the concepts of sexual compulsivity, sexual addiction, and sexual anorexia with identified norms for healthy sexuality.
    • Articulate some of the controversies that exist about the concept of sexual addiction.
    • Assess for sexual compulsivity, sexual addiction, and sexual anorexia in a presenting client.
    • Implement basic strategies for addressing sexual compulsivity, sexual addiction, and sexual anorexia as part of a comprehensive treatment program.
    • Identify personal barriers in clinicians that may exist to assessing or treating sexual addiction.

    Clinical Care of the Transgender Patient


    • Define terms used to describe the spectrum of gender expression.
    • Review the historical perspective of the treatment of gender dysphoria.
    • Assess current theories and quality of evidence that pertains to the etiology of gender dysphoria.
    • Discuss efforts to determine the prevalence of transgender individuals in the population.
    • Describe the unique healthcare needs of the transgender population.
    • Summarize the unique barriers to care in this population.
    • Facilitate the management of psychologic issues experience d by transgender individuals.
    • Discuss the potential benefits, limitations, and risks of hormonal and nonsurgical procedures and associated care involved in the treatment of transgender individuals.
    • Describe the care transgender patients require in undergoing various surgical procedures.
    • Develop a strategy of collaborative practice that addresses lifelong healthcare needs unique to transgender patients.
    • Discuss the unique needs of transgender children and adolescents.
    • Summarize the state of the education of healthcare professionals in the care of transgender patients.
